The Rat's Nest - 81 X1/9 Build

I wonder if there is someone with an X1/9 in your area who would take you for a drive or let you drive their car. This car really is a blast to drive!!!

None of my cars would win any awards for their looks. I have them to enjoy the drive.

Chris Obert is not far from where this exxe is located.
It would be worthy and good to ask Chris for a drive/ride in a good exxe..

Another long heavy day...

Oh, we got some big fun around here.
Reaching up in the scuttle to sand and scrape rust,
Then smear as much epoxy as possible with different brushes.

Followed by some undercoating.
Trying as many tricks as possible to cover way up under there where the Italians didn't.
Right side up -spray, upside down -spray-, repeat..

Runk panel reconstruction - complete with epoxy and weld-thru primer.

Windshield washer tank - vortex of misery!

After repairing the mount bracket,
And modifying it to actually drain...

Looked more closely at the tank.

Site of a former ant mass suicide!
Bodies strewn everywhere...

After removing the PO's plumber's strap contraption,
We find not just a cracked grommet, but also a cracked tank.

Bet you breakfast the pump motor is seized...

Having squirters is nice.
My 56 Beetle doesn't have them, and they do come in handy.
Thinking i have to temper my expectations for this project.
Squirters might be just too big an ask...

Italian engineering has it's limits you know...
Hope is not lost ;)

Chris has a good exxe?
🤨

Last time there i saw one and asked if he was parting it out.
Turns out it was his driver..!

And if you need a new pump, @halr75 posted that "a ‘99 Jeep Cherokee pump appears to be a direct drop in replacement"

I found that the washer pump from a 99 Jeep Cherokee is a direct drop in for about $10.

Edit - Bjorn beat me to it!

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
Sanding for days way down inside a frunk, or at the bottom of a compartment,
Another setback feels like a kick in the balls.

11+ hours yesterday.
Can't hardly get out of bed today.
Under the gun to get paint shot while the weather is good.

Spray-out on the panel shows decent results.
This LR corner was repaired in the past, so the paint is fresh(er).
Match is close enough. Flake is bigger but color is right so away we go.

Paralysis by analysis.. In my case it's the 'anal' in analysis.
Who spends hours bondo-ing all the scars smooth in the bottom of their frunk?
It's back-breaking work. Just can't help myself...

Finally, before the heat goes away, out in the yard.
Gotta keep away from trees that drop crap when a gust of wind comes.

Masked.

Epoxy.

Two separate shooting sessions of a few wet coats each.
Seems to have laid down well.

Breeze came up and threw some trash around.
And it's definitely lumpy in spots, especially the floor,
But I'm pretty happy with how it came out,
And really happy to have this done.

Hopefully it stayed warm enough last night the paint didn't blush,
But if it did,
it's staying that way!
😡

Soft sided tank in the left front headlight sponson. You can even get one with an integral pump.

I never understood the point of such a large tank. You may not need that bracket :)

I've owned my car 35 years & have yet to add washer fluid...

It's pretty nuts how rapid this project has been.
Thanks for noticing.
Only someone who has done a project like this knows just how much work it actually takes!

All these dumb shows…
-One hour later-
“Gosh, Chip, the car is so beautiful now”
🙄

The world is full of old cars left to rot that “some day are doing to get fixed up”.
The reality is it’s some year - or several.
Most will remain a pipe dream.

Unique position in life right now where i have a shop, tools, skills (sorta), the means to not be working, buy parts, full-time effort, and the physical ability to do the work (for now).

Really, though.. Thinking more about it,
I’m remembering back to my youth - being helpless.
Stuck with a broken Fiat, unable to go places or do things.
Nothing to be done about it.

Got something to prove here, dig?
If that makes any sense…
